When I pulled in my yard, Amika’s car was in my yard, which surprised me. Walking in my house, the smell of a brunch spot smacked me right in my face. In the kitchen, Amika sat at the bar with her head down while Jay moved about the kitchen in a tiny dress that was only meant to be worn in the house. It flared out over her ass and stopped right below her ass cheeks. Any gust of wind and the whole dress was over ass.

“Miss Amika,” I called her name.

When she raised her head, her eyes were bloodshot red. It looked as if she hadn’t gotten any sleep. Her skin was flushed and she had a jug of Pedialyte sitting next to her.

“Hi, Marshall.”

The moment she said that, she covered her mouth before jumping off the stool and running out of the kitchen.

“Poor girl. She’s such a lightweight. She’s been throwing up all morning. How are you?”

She walked over to me, wrapping her arms around my neck. Not being able to help myself, I wrapped my arms around her waist, pulling her closer to me. That felt good. She backed away from me and looked me up and down.

“You look nice.”

“Thank you. I pulled this out the back of the closet. Had dust on it and everything.”

She laughed. “I cooked enough for you if you want some. I got to get some food in Amika’s stomach before her insides waste away. She threw up all over the bed and my bathroom, so I brought her down here while I cooked to keep an eye on her.”

“What a good friend you are. Her mother gave me a death stare earlier, so she knows.”

She rolled her eyes before walking back over to the stove and turning it off.

“So, how was church?”

I walked over to the sink and washed my hands.

“You know your father. Tried to step down as a deacon and that didn’t go over so well. Thomas tried to step to me about you and—”

“Wait, what?”

Amika walked in the kitchen. “Jaymi, is the food ready? I feel so empty.”

“Yes, the food is ready.”

There was eggs, bacon, pancakes, French toast, grits, and even oatmeal. Everything looked and smelled so good.

“She’s a freaking wiz in the kitchen. My mom tries her best with me in the kitchen, but I only know how to cook enough to survive. Not like this.”

I could see her mouth start to water. After we fixed our plates and drinks, we went to the dining room. Amika tore into the food as if she hadn’t eaten in days.

“What happened last night?”

“You got drunk, threw up on a man’s shoes, and I brought both of y’all here last night.”

Her eyes widened. “I threw up on a guy’s shoes!?” She was mortified.

I nodded my head.

“Do you know who he is?”

“Hook. He was over here on Friday night.”

“I can’t remember…” She pressed her hand against her forehead. “My mother probably has pictures of me being drug out of a bar and oh my God.
